My New Years Blogging Resolutions

With the New Year right around the corner and my 1 year blogging anniversary a few weeks after, I thought it would be a good thing to think about how I want to make my blog even better

The first thing that I thought about was my blog description "Family Life." Over the past year, I've been pretty private about my family's unique situation but I think there is something that could benefit others from it, so I want to start making it a weekly post. I have so many stories to tell about college life as a married family that I think you will enjoy. Right now the title I have in mind is "Making It Monday." That's the best way I can describe our situation... we're just making it!

Secondly, I want to do something like a freebies 101 series about ways to make the most out of all the great stuff out there that companies give away for free. Also, how to use social media to get some of these great goodies!

And the last thing I have on my mind is Swagbucks. I'm not sure how many of my readers are actually taking advantage of this great site and I feel like I'm doing you a disservice by not promoting it more. I earned over $100 in Amazon gift cards and several other prizes this year. I plan on providing tips on how to score points (or SB's) every week as well as listing some of the great special offers that help you get to your prize goal quicker! {Side note: I'm emptying my SB account and challenging myself to earn enough prizes to pay for next years Christmas!}

Other thoughts that I haven't fully finished thinking on include deal sites and couponing. Have any suggestions?  I'd love to hear them!

My Traveling Mom Challenge with XIGO

For the past month, I've been taking a vitamin supplement called XIGO. I found a tweet from MomTalkRadio.com that they were looking for moms traveling over Thanksgiving to try the vitamins. I tend to get sick very easily so I thought "someone is actually trying to keep me healthy for the holidays. Well, I can use all the help I can get."

My Dreams for the New Year

With 2010 drawing to a close in a few weeks, it is time to start thinking about the new year and all the things we wish for it. This is not so much a New Year's Resolution but more of a change in thought or heart for the year. There are so many things that we want for ourselves or wish we could change. The new year holds so much promise for a better life and I am planning on making the most of mine. Here are my dreams and aspirations for new possibilities in the new year.

  • I dream of doing more with my education. With my husband in school working towards his degree, it is not financially possible for me to go back to school for Paralegal Studies. We have planned on me continuing my education once he secures his degree. In the meantime, I have started a legal blog to keep myself current in legal news. My goal is to continue my legal blogging and take a few of the free legal courses on iTunes University to stay sharp.
  • I aspire to do more with my family life blog. I would love to make it a source of income for me and my family. I am dedicated to learning more about becoming a great blogger and ways to monetize my blog. I would really love to get a sponsorship to a few of the blogging conferences to really get myself and my blog "out there."
  • I aspire to work out more. I know this is on thousands of womens lists, but I really have not taken an interest in my health since college. Everything else seemed to take priority such as classes or work. Now that I have the time to do it, I should not waste the opportunity.
  • I am dreaming about our move over the summer for my husband's internship. I wan to explore our new temporary home and make the most out of a once in a lifetime experience. I just have to make the effort and leave my hesitations behind. Change can be a great thing so I need to embrace it.
I hope you enjoyed reading my dreams and aspirations for the new year. I just have to make the effort to turn them into reality. Now that I have them in print I have a good reminder for myself. What are your dreams and aspirations for the new year?

During the OWN launch weekend, viewers will have the chance to see a little of everything OWN has to offer. OWN programming includes original series and specials, all focused on entertaining, informing and inspiring people to live their best lives.

A New Year of Swag {Bucks}

January will be my 1 year blogging anniversary as well as my 1 year Anniversary with Swagbucks.  I was lucky enough to have a Facebook friend who was already earning prizes with them. She let me in on this great rewards site that gives you internet currency (SB's) for doing something as simple as internet searches. Users can redeem their SB's for great prizes!

Let me share my prizes with you over the 2010 year:

Send & Organize Gift Cards with SWAGG

Ever want to sign up for a store's rewards card but didn't want to add another card to your stack? SWAGG is a new app designed forDroid and Apple mobile devices that helps users to "digitally" organize gift, loyalty & membership cards from over 250 brands. Instead of keeping them in your wallet or handbag the cards are stored within the app and can be easily accessed for use in-store or online. It aslo keeps track of balances on your cards as well which is one of my favorite functions.

My Freebie Posting Methodology

Today's thought is about my feelings about freebie posting. There are literally tons of freebie sites out there. Many of these sites however, post every link  that has a "free" item on it. The problem with that is several of these links are often scams or local websites that have no way of fulfilling the thousands of freebie requests they get once posted on these sites.

Holiday Giveaway Winners!

Thanks so much for making our first holiday giveaway event a success.
We've had 5 winners in one month!
And 3 great prizes!

Last week's winner for the Agloves it was #1 Sara.
And now for the winners of the Old El Paso Family Taco Night Pack and Amazon eGift cards...

Hamburger Soup AKA Beef Vegetable Soup

I know the name could be a little off putting but think beef vegetable soup with ground beef instead of the other cut of meat. For lack of better name, we called it "hamburger soup" growing up and mom just went with it. I love this recipe because its so hearty, makes a nice pot full and is great for the winter months. This would be a great crock pot meal. I normally just serve with grilled cheese sandwiches.

Ingredients:
3/4 - 1 lb. ground beef (or chuck)
1 lb mixed veggies (frozen or canned)
16 oz canned tomatoes (stewed or diced works best)
1 can beef stock or broth
Seasonings

{Not SO} Wordless Wednesday: Chocolate Thief

A used napkin, chocolate wrapper and box of chocolates opened from the bottom.
Guess who left this evidence in the living room?
At least baby girl wiped her face after eating LOL!

Thrifty Tip: Storing Your Freebies

Four styles of basketImage via Wikipedia
Over the past year, I've gotten tons of freebies and had to find somewhere to put them without becoming a hoarder. So I came up with a system that works for me. I loved the idea of keeping freebies around our home without people actually knowing how I got them (makes for good conversation when you can point around the room at all your free stuff.)

Here's how I organize my goodies:

Free $5 egift card to Magaiznes.com from ME!

Hi everyone! I'm writing another special post today. This is one is about Magazines.com. I first heard of Magazines.com through a rewards site called MyPoints.com. Since Thanksgiving, Magazines.com and MyPoints have given me a total of $15 in egift cards to use towards magazines. My first magazine ordered was Health which I scored absolutely free using one of the cards (plus 500 MyPoints added to my account.)

I'm saving my other 2 e-gift cards for the daily specials. Hopefully one for $5 will come along before it ends on Christmas. If not I will just use it on one of the other great titles which typically are around $10. They also have promotion where they take another $5 off here. Sort them by price and you'll see some titles under $5 (which will make them FREE!)

Anyways, magazines.com just sent me another email, where I can send 5 people a $5 egift card to use on their site and I wanted to share them with my readers. If you would like to receive one, please send an email to youngwifeandmom {AT} gmail {DOT} com. I will email you back to let you know if you are one of the first 5.

Disclosure: I was not compensated in any way for writing this post. The $5 gift cards for friends is part of the refer-a-friend program at Magazines.com. Should a recipient purchase a subscription, I will be provided a $10 e-gift card to Magazines.com. See full details on this program here.

Site Review: TheFoundary.com

This post is inspired by a great deal that I got last week, a mini princess rocking chair. What's so special about buying a rocking chair? The fact that I only paid $6.00 for it shipped! You would think that when I received the item in the mail that it would be poor quality right? It has to be for $6! Sorry to disappoint but it is GREAT quality! So let me tell you a little about the Foundary.

Freebie Friday and Follow for Dec. 10th

Happy Friday Everyone!

Thursday Thought: The Santa Debate

Wanted: Santa ClausImage by kevindooley via Flickr

I realize that with Christmas coming near and my child growing so fast, it's time to have the Santa talk with my husband. How do we want to raise our child when it comes to Santa? Religion aside, I think there's nothing wrong with believing in Santa but at the same time I think that you shouldn't have to lie to your child or use the Santa card to get them to act nice during the year. I'm at a loss. When I asked hubby about this earlier this week, he said he didn't care (typical hubby, but I still love him.) So that leaves me to decide. {*HUGE SIGH*}

Skin MD Natural Lotion Review & Giveaway

Like many people I have issues with dry skin. I have a family history of skin problems such as psoriasis and eczema but did not fully experience it until my pregnancy. I know it's normal to have an itchy belly when you're pregnant but this didn't go away after my daughter was born. Ever since then I've been struggling with eczema patches. I was ecstatic when I was offered the chance to review Skin MD Natural, an eco-friendly lotion that helps those with dry skin, eczema and psoriasis while still being sensitive enough for the whole family.

Some facts about Skin MD Natural:
  • 6 times more effective in hydrating skin than glycerin based lotions, which is the the industry standard
  • A little goes a long way - Only a dime sized amount is needed for hands. It only took a quarter sized amount to moisturize my baby's most of my baby's body (who also suffers from eczema)
  • Absorbs fast and has no greasy feel at all
  • Manufactured in the United States using 100% solar power
  • Free of animal products and animal testing

Wordless Wednesday: A Social Butterfly

This is from Thanksgiving. She went around to everyone and acted like she was in their conversation!

Baked Enchiladas

Condiments — sour cream, grated cheese, ...Image via WikipediaI made this recipe when we had moved to a new city and the store did not carry the enchilada dinner kit. From memory I snatched up some ingredients and made a batch. This has become one of our favorite dishes. This serves 4 (about 1 enchilada per person.)

Ingredients:
1 lb cooked chicken (cubed, sliced, or shredded)
2 cups sliced bell peppers and onions
Seasoning packet (your choice - taco, enchilada, fajita, etc)
1 14 oz can red enchilada sauce (I like Old El Paso)
medium tortillas
Shredded cheese

And the Agloves Winner is...

Our Agloves winner is #1: Sarah Cody!!

Thanks to everyone who entered we still have 2 other giveaways with a total of 4 more winners. Check them out here.

Meet Kristin, Our Dec. Mommy of the Month!

This month's winner is Kristin from Kristin's Review.

Here is her exclusive interview post with me.
Tiffany: How long have you been blogging?
Kristin: Since January 2010 (Me too!)
Tiffany: What started you blogging?
Kristin: I wanted to become more intentional about life and thought blogging would help me with that.
Tiffany: What is your blog about?
Kristin: Kristin's Review is a miss mash of things for me.  It is mainly about great things I find for moms, babies and kids.  I have 6 kids and always found myself searching for the best clothes, toys, shoes and gifts and would end up sharing my finds with my family and friends.  I figured it would be fun to start a new blog sharing those things as well as deals I find and advice from my experience as a mom.
Tiffany: What is the best deal you have ever gotten?
Kristin: Hmmm...I love finding deals and in some circles I am known as an expert.  I think the best deal I ever got was back when my oldest was a baby and I got several baby items for free because of stacking coupon codes and money off codes. That was back when a lot of online retailers were just starting online stores and offered a bunch of really great money off codes.  I got all kinds of toys, clothes, and even baby gear for very little money.
Tiffany: What is a typical day for you?
Kristin: Typical days don't happen very often at my house.  I have a general schedule but because there are so many of us I find that I really have to be flexible.  Usually I wake up early before the kids to fit in quiet time, blogging, and exercise.  Then I make breakfast and our whole family eats together.  3 of my kids head off to school and the other 3 (2 of whom are homeschooled) stay at home with me.  The rest of the day consists of laundry, schooling, playing, cleaning, checking email, more blogging, making dinner, and getting kids in bed.  Then usually more cleaning and a bit of relaxing and planning for the next day.
Tiffany: What do you like to do for your "Me time"?
Kristin: I figured out really early on that I need to get away alone to recharge.  My husband is so understanding of this and gives me nights off often.  Usually I will go out and get some dinner and then go to Barnes and Noble and get a latte and browse and read.  I also like to go out with girl friends.
Tiffany: Do you have regular Me Time or do you have to snag it whenever you get a chance?
Kristin: I usually snag it when I have the chance but lately it is at least once a week.  Which is great!
Tiffany: What has been the toughest parenting issue you've faced?
Kristin: Potty training has been challenging because none of my children have been easy to train. However, I would have to say the toughest parenting challenge has been figuring out how to communicate with and discipline a child who seems to forget everything I say.  I am still working on this one.  It keeps me humble in my parenting.
Tiffany: What is your best advice to new moms?
Kristin: Relax and go easy on yourself!  We are all harder on ourselves than others are and even than our children are.  Our children are full of grace for us when we mess up and no one gets it all right every time.  Don't let the expectations you assume others have for you control you and make you feel like you need to be and do more.  You will never get these moments back with your children so enjoy them. Most everything else can wait...even laundry.
Tiffany: Just for fun - What celebrity do you have a crush on?
Kristin: A crush?  Hmmm...I honesty don't know.  I think my husband has ruined other men for me because he is so good at being a husband and I always look at other men in comparison to him.   I know that may seem like I'm just trying to be nice to him but it really is true.

Thanks for the interview Kristin!

I hope everyone will get the the chance to stop by her blog and say "Hi!" Her blog button is featured on the sidebar the rest of December.   As the winner  of our contest, she has also earned a permanent feature on our M.O.M (Mommy of the Month) Wall of Fame here!

Want to be a featured M.O.M? I will be accepting applications until December 6th!! Enter for January's featured Mommy today and get become the first winner of the New Year. Get all of the details here. December's M.O.M. poll will be posted on the sidebar on Dec. 7th. Remember to vote!

Book Review: "Everything Christmas" by David Bordon and Thomas J. Winters

Everything Christmas is a collection of facts, stories, songs, recipes, homemade crafts and so much more themed for the holiday season. For every day of the advent calendar there is a bundle of each one of these activities to share and complete with your family.

This book can easily become one of our Christmas traditions. With its traditional and new holiday elements, this book is great for any family, pleasing both the older and newer generations. The advent style organization of the book makes it very easy to read through while the index makes it easy to find exactly the item from the book you want, from a recipe to a craft. The red and green ink and designs further add to the Christmas cheer that comes from reading this book. This is a book that will have a permanent place on our family bookshelf.

To download and read the first chapter of this great book go here.
Also check out these downloadable cards from Everything Christmas here

Disclosure: I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

Book Review: "Unlocked" by Karen Kingsbury

Two high school students are seemingly worlds apart. Ella is one of the popular girls, but also one of the nicest girls at Fulton high. Holden, on the other hand, is autistic and often laughed at by other students for his odd behavior. Ella feels a connection with Holden and befriends him despite his condition. She soon finds that they used to be best friends as young children and begins a search into what happened and how to help unlock Holden from his "private world" of autism.

Thursday Thought: Thinking About Your Cashier

This is supposed to be the best time of year. It is for most that are not lower lever workers in retail. Disgruntled customers, longer shifts, shoplifters are just the beginning of problems for cashiers and managers of your favorite store. As is that were not enough, here is the most troublesome thought lingering in the back of your cashiers mind as you checkout - the possibility of a robbery. Since the holiday season began the number of robberies has increased as it does every year.

The Heart of Haiti Initiative

Here are a few facts on this initiative:

Instead of providing one-time funding through charity, Heart of Haiti is creating opportunities for Haitian artisans to earn income with dignity by creating jobs and income for the people of Haiti.

The Heart of Haiti collection has already led to employment of 350 artists in Haiti and has provided some financial benefits for an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people in the country.

You can check out these amazing pieces at Macy's here.

Disclosure: I am writing this post to spread the word about Heart of Haiti through a Mom Bloggers Club member program and will receive a Heart of Haiti pendant as a thank you

Gifting Boxed Chocolates

Christmas is my favorite time of year! I love the lights, the smell of the Christmas trees and giving presents to my loved ones. One of the best presents to give is chocolates and I love to give these to teachers. Every little bite of chocolate gives a little bit of happiness and teachers deserve so much for playing a major role in the education of our children. And also,  who doesn't love chocolate?  It is a great way to give a gift for the person who you don't know that well. And in my experience, chocolate is always an appreciated gift and never returned.

For ideas on how to make your holidays special with chocolate, check out Hershey's special holiday site at www.celebratewithhersheys.com

Disclosure: I am entering a contest for a Hershey’s Pot of Gold prize pack as a member of the Mom Bloggers Club. This post serves as my entry.

'Tis the season for...furniture!

Do you purchase furnishings for your home around this time of year? With all of these great sales going on right now I am really considering looking into buying something specifically for our home. Not that we need it, but I think we can look into buying one or two nice pieces for our home each year like TV stands for flat screens. My husband bought a flat screen earlier this year for a really great price but did not think twice about where we were going to put it with our mixed-matched handed-down pieces. For example one of our TV's are sitting on the coffee table against the wall and another is stiting on a wide dresser. At the least, I am happy that the flat screen TV is out of the little one's reach.

Maybe I can convince hubby to go furniture shopping each year around Christmas. I think that this might turn into a nice tradition. A TV stand this year, a lamp next year and eventually we will have a nicely furnished home. This may just work.

Easy Pepper Steak with Rice

My Easy Pepper Steak
Here is another of my recipes that uses a "boxed" item as the main ingredient. This one uses the precooked refrigerated roast beef tips that can be found by the meat section. My store often has them for around $6 plus there have been a few $1.50 off coupons in the newspaper lately. I also use the  12 oz frozen pre-cut frozen peppers which are normally 3 for $5 at our store (We use peppers and onions a lot and lack the transportation to get fresh ones on a regular basis.) I keep rice in the pantry so this recipe runs under $10 for 4 servings which is less than what most similar frozen entrees cost and tastes better too!
