Thursday Thought: It's the little things

Mom and DaughterImage by VancityAllie via Flickr
It's the little things that make a child smile. My daughter has taught me this simple but important lesson. When  I was pregnant, I dreamed about all the things I would get here. But as I have learned, she doesn't care about them, she only wants me and to know she is loved by me. We have some funny things we do together that bring her so much joy.
  • We touch the tips of our index fingers and make a silly sound (like the wonder twins did with their rings)
  •  We smile at each other like we're planning something to get the other one.
  •  I growl like a lion and she takes off running because its chasing time. Daddy is the safe spot. Then we switch and I run since she is after me.
  • I hand her an object and she studies it, then looks at me and smiles.
  • We have silly dance time using the intro songs to kids shows on Disney.
  • We have tickle fests where she does something to try to get me to tickle her and by then end we're both tired and snuggle in bed.
These are just a few that I have noticed she loves it, and I do too. Just these little things seem to mean so much to her. That's why we do them everyday =)

What special little things do you do with your children?

Weekly Recipe: Easy Shrimp Scampi Pasta

Hello everyone! This weeks recipe is "semi-homemade" making it very easy to create at home. Normally pastas like these cost over $10 per plate at big restaurants. This one is about $10 total for 4 servings.I made this because small frozen shrimp cocktail platters were on sale at my store for $1.99 each! Then I found scampi sauce nearby for less than $3. Add in some pasta and we have a meal!

Thrifty Tip: Scuffs

Mr Clean Magic ErasersImage by tim7423 via Flickr
Hello everyone! Today's tip comes from my hubby.

To remove scuffs from light colored shoes use a magic eraser. I tried this on a pair of my shoes and they looked great. No more embarrassing scuffs on your shoes.  Shoes can last much longer using this tip.

Follow the directions on the box and test a small spot to make sure you don't damage your shoes. I wouldn't recommend trying this on suede shoes.

Our Free Weekend

Bert & ErnieImage by cliff1066™ via Flickr
Our exhibit was similar to this one.
Hey everyone!

Saturday was the annual Museum Day. My family went for the first time and we really enjoyed it. We went to one of local museums and was among at least 100 other families there. When we arrived, we were ushered to park in overflow parking so we knew we were in for a crowd. Luckily there were no lines at the ticket booth. There were puppets from all centuries and countries there. The highlight of the trip was the Jim Henson exhibit. We got to see a life-sized Big Bird and a sketch of how he is operated.

My fave was the Fraggle Rock character puppets! It was amazing to see how sketches turned into real puppets. My daughter really enjoyed looking at Ernie (he's in some of her story books) and she liked the puppet materials, where there were swatches of puppet fabric. I took the opportunity to teach her describing words like soft, fuzzy, smooth, rough, etc. Jim Henson was a genius in my opinion. He worked on so many of our favorite kids shows that I never knew he was a part of. It was a great experience.

Museum Day saved us $16 total on general admission for me and my husband. The little one was free since she is under 2 and parking was free. While we were there, I snagged a few souvenirs - a postcard for $.50, a VHS video for $.50 (yes, I have a VHS/DVD combo player) and a finger puppet for $2.50.

Our Family on Museum Day 2010
Looking forward to the next free event in my area.

Cucumber slicesImage by Eric B├ęgin via FlickrHello everyone! We all know that cucumber slices relieve puffy eyes. But did you know that it's because of all of the water it contains. If you don't have the time to sit with slices of them over your eyes, commit to drinking a bottle of water. The hydrating property of the water will also benefit the rest of your body too. "Love and Respect For a Lifetime" by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs

Hello everyone! Today I am reviewing "Love and Respect For a Lifetime" the newest book by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs.

This is a gift book designed for married couples. The author poses the thought that at the root of every marital problem is the issue of love and respect. Women have the need to always feel loved by their partner and men have the need to always feel respected by their partner. The book bases it's thought on the scripture Ephesians 5:33 "However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband."

The book discusses different ways to address these needs while strengthening your marriage especially in the area of communication. These tips are presented in an easy to read manner, with scriptures concerning love and marriage throughout. The pictures are beautiful and fit very well within the theme of the book. The main feature of this book that I appreciated was written in a way that makes it applicable to both men and women. The author looked at this subject from both perspectives of husbands and wives, which makes it a more beneficial resource than others. I think that any married couple or anyone considering marriage would benefit from reading this book.

You can purchase this book at numerous stores that sell books as well as online retailers such as Amazon and Barnes and Nobles

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

Thursday Thought: There Goes My Baby!

This baby is one month old.Image via Wikipedia
It's hard to believe that my little one is 13 months old.

I recently installed a slide show program on my computer and it has been scrolling all my daughter's baby pictures since the ultrasound. With every picture she's bigger and bigger. She'll never be that small again. I miss it...but I'm also loving the little lady she's growing into.

The other day she ran into my arms and gave me a baby kiss. It was so sweet. She tried to bite me a few seconds later but the thought was cute. When she gets tired she climbs into my lap and lay back. She runs, dances, claps, laughs and has a mind of her own. Everyday is an adventure for her (and me!) She's learning new words and works hard to express herself using them.

I find myself looking at the old photos, then looking back to my daughter playing and thinking "there goes my baby..."

Pan Fried Tilapia

Seasoned Tilapia - Wild & White Rice w/Onion -...Image by Old Shoe Woman via Flickr
Not the actual finished product but will be equally yummy
Hello everyone! Here is this weeks budget friendly recipe. Since I cook for a family of 2 and 1/4 each recipe is for 2 servings. Double the recipe for 4 servings.

Ingredients:
1/4 cup oil (I use olive oil)
4 tilapia fillets (thawed & patted dry)
1/4 cup flour
1 egg (beaten)
1-1/2 cups panko bread crumbs

Directions:
  1. Make three bowls - one with the flour, one with the beaten egg and a little water to thin it, and the last with panko. (It is best to line these up in order)
  2. Warm the oil over medium heat to in a non-stick skillet
  3. Dip the fish into each bowl and carefully place directly into the heated pan. (I normally cook 2-3 at a time to prevent overcrowding.)
  4. When you see the fish turn golden at the bottom flip it over carefully.
  5. Continue to cook the other side for another few minutes.
  6. Have a plate lined with paper towels ready and move the fish onto it.
  7. Cover and place in oven or microwave to stay warm. (turned off)
  8. Repeat for second batch.

Season as desired and serve with brown rice.

Note: You can also use this recipe for pan fried scallops.

Thrifty Tip: An Unlikely Treasure

Dollar TreeImage via WikipediaHello everyone! Today's tip is one I do on a regular basis. Check your local dollar tree. They carry some of the popular brands at lower costs. Some in my area have even expanded to carry frozen, refrigerated and bakery goods at $1 or less. Foods at the Dollar Tree do not have closer expiration dates than those at regular grocery stores. The next time you get the chance to shop, stop by and browse for deals. I'm never disappointed! =)

10 Tips for Planning a Unique Baby Shower

Planning Baby Showers can be very intimidating if you haven't given one before. There is so much pressure to thrown "the perfect shower" that you can get lost in all the madness. Here are 10 tips to help you throw a unique shower on any budget. I'll take unique over perfect any day.
  1. Check with the mommy-to-be. Everyone is different. See if there is anything in particular she wants to see at the party and go from there.
  2. Select a theme. The usual "pink is for girls" and "blue is for boys theme" can be so much more. Do some research on the internet and see if are themes that you can be more creative with like zoo or jungle (animal themed), princess or prince charming, cutie pie (sweets.)
  3. Pick a date. Most showers are typically on a weekend but you can be as creative as you would like. A Tuesday or Thursday works just as well.
  4. Pick a time. When is the mother-to-be feeling her best? Morning, mid-day, afternoon, evening? Why not try an evening and make it a ladies night?
  5. Select an invitation that fits your personalized theme. Many places have create-your-own cards. Visit Tiny Prints baby shower invitations for inspiration.
  6. Have a potluck for snacks. Its going to be hectic enough without trying to make a gourmet meal for everyone too. Enlist the help of some of those attending. Be sure to include this on your invitations next to the RSVP information.
  7. Use your talents. If you're crafty make something for the decorations. A simple tablecloth stamped with some words related to babies makes a great impression. For my daughter's birthday party, I made a cute signature mat for guests to sign. Now it serves as a cute keepsake.
  8. Find fun games online or make your own. Many are printable. You can find themed paper at many craft stores to tie into the shower theme you've selected.
  9. Semi-DIY: Favors can be costly, but so can making them completely from scratch. I like buying some from the dollar store that have the potential to become fantastic. Add some ribbon here and a cut-out there and they will fit the theme easily.
  10. Have Fun! Your party will not be perfect. The more you try to make it so, the more things will probably go in the opposite direction. Be the same relaxed, fun-loving, etc host that you really are.
“I wrote this blog post while participating in the TwitterMoms and Tiny Prints blogging program, making me eligible to get a Tiny Prints gift code worth $50, plus 25 FREE Tiny Prints greeting cards—a total gift value of $149.75! For more information on how you can participate, click here.”

Product Review: Johnson's Bedtime Toddler Bars

Hello everyone! This week I posted my product review on the Viewpoints.com website. I have been thinking about a product review for them and this was the perfect opportunity.

This product is a soap bar wrapped, in a mesh-type pouch that suds when you wash up. This has made baths with my little one so much easier. I really liked this product and hope you'll read the full review here when you have the time.

About Viewpoints.com: Provides user-submitted reviews to the community. They also give products and samples from time to time, in exchange for a review, such as this sample they posted yesterday. I received a Conair fabric steamer from them a few months ago in exchange for a review! They also occasionally run promotions to get $10 giftcards for 10 reviews.

Weekly Recipe: Easy Peanut Butter Cookies

Peanut butter cookies, cooked and on the bakin...Image via Wikipedia
Not an actual picture but extremely close to the finished product.
Hello everyone! Here is this weeks budget friendly recipe. Last I was reminded of this simple cookie recipe I learned in middle school Home Economics class. This was a fave of my hubby, but I haven't made it since we were dating. I will be making these this weekend.

    Easy Peanut Butter Cookies:
    1 egg
    1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 cup sugar (feel free to use less. I'd recommend 3/4 cup the first time you make these and if necessary, adjust 1/4 cup either way depending on your results.)

Baking SodaImage by DBarefoot via Flickr
Today's  tip is about cleaning up spills. I used to work at a retail store where spills happened almost daily. We used to use a powdered formula that soaked up spills almost immediately. Well, that's good for commercial use, but what about home spills?

Baking soda has a similar effect on spills. Next time you spill anything from soda to oil, sprinkle enough baking soda to cover the spill plus a little extra and allow the baking soda to absorb the liquid. Then sweep it up (or scoop it up) and mop later when you have the time.
