Back to School with 39DollarGlasses.com: Review + Giveaway!

For many families, the kids are getting ready to go back to school, if they haven't started already. It's also the time of year when many get new glasses for themselves or their children. Glasses can be very expensive, especially if you don't have vision insurance. I was contacted by a discount eye-wear company called 39DollarGlasses.com to see if I would be interested in doing a review of their site and discount glasses. I had never purchased anything like it online before.

My glasses out of the case
Just as the name indicates, prices for complete glasses start at $39. There is such a great selection of glasses that it really was hard to pick my favorite one. I finally chose the Gramercy in black. They arrived within the next week and looked awesome! I've been wearing them for about 2 weeks now and they fit comfortably. What I like most about these glasses are that they have Transitions lenses, an add-on made available to you at a discounted price! I have to wear my glasses all day, everywhere I go so sunglasses are not an option for me. The total price of these glasses with the Transitions add-on were significantly LESS than I paid for a pair of "on sale" glasses with regular lenses at a department store! I did not realize that it could be so affordable. So parents you can find affordable Transitions lenses for yourself and your family. If transitions are not for you, they also carry a great line of discounted sunglasses as well.

Mommy Mixology: A Cocktail for Every Calamity! Review + Giveaway!

"Sitcom housewives like June Cleaver and Carol Brady made mothering look like a constant joy, but most moms know the reality is far from simple. Getting through the motherhood years will take a good sense of humor and a few cocktails..."

One of my favorite things about going out with my mommy group, besides the adult conversation and time away from the kids, are the drinks! It's one of the few times, I get to relax and enjoy an adult beverage without my child asking "what's that?!" Motherhood is definitely different than I had thought it would be but even more of a blessing than I ever imagined. Needless to say there are times when I feel like I could pull my hair out, and now thanks to this new book I know "there's a drink for that!"

Five Question Friday #5QF

This week I celebrated my 25th birthday!! And the week just seemed to fly by after that.
Here are this week's Q&A's!

1. If you could have been (could be) any profession you wanted (brains and $$$ no problem) what would it be?
YWM: I would be a Supreme Court Justice, helping to decide the major issues facing us today. It's the ultimate job and you have it for life. I actually visited the building once (on the weekend) but wasn't able to get there during the week for a tour. I'll have to post the pic later.

Make Your Own Sodas with "The Artisan Soda Workshop" Book

My absolute favorite drinks are sodas, with cola in the number one spot. I often wish there were a way to still drink my cola without all of the artificial ingredients. Natural brands in the stores are so expensive and the artificially flavored brands are cheaper. What do you do? Many are turning to making their own soda at home! With the invention of several hot soda making appliances such as the SodaStream, it's become much easier to do so. Buying the syrups for them can get costly too though, so why not make them yourself!

The Young Mom Work Struggle

Now that we're settled into our new home in a new city and state, I've decided to get back out there and find a job in my desired field - law. Let me preface this by saying I have a bachelors degree in criminal justice but as it relates to law, you can have any undergraduate degree when entering law school. Mid-way through my undergrad I decided that law school is not an option, now or anytime in the foreseeable future. Not only is the cost way too much (I graduated with NO DEBT and not planning to have any in this lifetime) but the job market is not as good as it was when I began college. Most of the jobs are going to paralegals, whose training is much more realistic for me.

So it was decided that I would pursue a career as a paralegal. Not really what I'd imagined as a child, but neither was being a lawyer. I'd only come to that decision by being told that an artist is not an acceptable career - but that's neither here nor there. I love law.

Five Question Friday #5QF

TGIF! I had a disappointing start to the week that just threw off completely, but it's Friday, I have my cup of tea and  it's time for 5QF!! Here are this week's Q&A's!

1. What's the one thing you buy every time you walk into the store?
YWM: A coke at checkout. I deserve a little treat after all my planning, shopping and saving on our groceries.

2. If you had a day all to yourself how would you spend it?
YWM: I spend enough time at home on a regular basis so I'd go to the spa, hair salon, mall and relaxxxxx!

Our Hair Journey Plus DIY Recipe

I wanted a little boy. Selfishly so. Just so I wouldn't have to do his hair like I would with a girl. I'm bi-racial, black and white, while my husband is black. Knowing my own struggles with my hair and my lack of knowledge concerning black hair, I was so hoping the ultrasound said boy. With a boy, the hair responsibility would fall on my husband.

God had a sense of humor and blessed us with a girl anyway.

Master Lock SafeSpace™ Laptop Lock
Theft is everywhere these days: online and offline and our students are the most at risk. With school right around the corner, it's best to be proactive and protect your items before anything happens.

Tips for keeping your stuff safe this year:

  • Never leave anything unattended. Not even to step out for the bathroom, a quick phone call, nothing!! Take it with you if possible.
  • If you have to leave it, lock it up. Laptop locks are awesome if you are working on something and need to step out for a second.
  • Get the SSN's from your big ticket items- This is the first thing you're asked for in the event that electronics, bikes and other expensive items are stolen. They are typically engraved or labeled somewhere on the item. Take a few minutes and write them down in a safe place.
  • Take photos of your items - These are also handy if they go missing.
  • Put your name on it - Crooks tend to like things that aren't labeled. It's easier to pass off as theirs. There are some really nice ones you can order with a tracking # on it just in case they get lost.

For more safety tips and information from Masterlock, check them out on Facebook here.

Disclosure: I am entering a contest for a Master Lock back-to-school prize pack as a member of the Mom Bloggers Club. This post serves as my entry.

Review: A Happy You: Your Ultimate Prescription for Happiness

Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo,
 PhD, MS, PT

Being a parent definitely has some stressful moments. For some, the stress seems constant. Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, PhD, MS, PT offers her top tips for happier moms. And if you're like me, I need all the help I can get to ease mine. As they saying goes, a happy mom means a happy family (for the most part.)
  1. Jump on the bed: dance around the house, race your kids to the car.  Any type of exercise will boost your happiness
  2. Be assertive: don’t wait for your children or partner to ask how they can help.  Delve out the responsibilities
  3. Be grateful for all that you do and all the positives in your life.  Research shows that gratitude is the quickest and longest lasting way to achieve happiness

I was so intrigued by these tips that I reached out and requested to review her latest book, "A Happy You: Your Ultimate Prescription for Happiness." This best selling book aims to help not only moms who are struggling, but everyone who is struggling with happiness. So dads, you haven't been left out! Dubbed the "Head Coach for Happiness," she's received praise by Shaq, and it's right there on the front cover (sports fans can appreciate this. We did!)

Five Question Friday #5QF

TGIF! Here are today's Q&A's!

1. What is a must in a hotel room?
YWM: A great view. Nothing like having a beautiful room with nothing to look at outside. Two out of our three past two stays had a great view of downtown Atlanta and downtown Austin!

2. Which Olympic event would you be best at?
YWM: Track. Most of my day is spent chasing after my child and speed cleaning.

3. What's your stance on the Chick-fil-A subject?
